Custom T-Shirt Diary 63: Outdoor Recess
Outdoor Recess is the most recent t-shirt addition to Evan Webster Ink’s retail storefront, SQRZ market. The first run of this line involved printing two designs which commemorate mythical tournaments based on the classic playground games tetherball and red rover (check out these t-shirts here).
The idea behind the line is to re-imagine the old games we all loved as kids. There are a ton of fondly remembered playground games and I wish each had its own league and stars. The t-shirts are an attempt to bring that far-flung dream slightly closer to reality.
There are two designs printed as part of this line:
[Red Rover]The Red Rover design is a pretend international tournament championship t-shirt. It pits “The Great Red Wall” versus “Green Crusaders” in a competition to determine 1932’s world champion. The design is inspired by old boxing posters and is printed using an inkless process called dye sublimation on extra soft vintage cream colored t-shirts.

Ringside seats used to be $5.40, ah the good old days ... this is exactly what good memories Outdoor Recess tees preserves!
The tetherball t-shirts places us at a regional tournament on Lake Champlain, VT in 1969. In this imaginary and awesome world a National Tetherball Association has been formed to promote competition among the world’s elite tetherballers. And everyone knows that any sort of self-respecting tetherball player has a unique nickname. The are printed on one section of the shirt and include: Linda “Scrappy” Simon, Richard “Rhinotears” Webster and “Jumping” Johnny Horton.
Based on the classic Woodstock poster, this design is printed with three colors of ink on a distressed vintage t-shirt.
